Ive been wracking my brain on how to convert my M5R2 to RWD. I’ve heard that just the tailshaft housing needs to be converted, some have said the mainshaft does too. But I havent found any part number that differentiates the RWD and 4x4 Mainshafts. And visual inspections of photos of mainshafts from ebay ads yields no obvious differences

Exactly what my old truck looked like, except I had a rear rollpan.

How did you like it? I always loved that era F series.

I’ve never had my hands on one but I do remember reading that the 4x4 output shaft is shorter than the 2wd.

I know a guy I can ask about it tomorrow.

It was a lot of fun. A handful for a 20-year-old, especially when the tires were bald, haha.

I still think it’s the last of the trucks from Ford that actually looked like a truck. It is the E39 of the F-series line. Classic understated, slightly boxy, but well-defined and purposeful.

Definitely agree. It’s one of the best looking trucks ever

This was after the second worst day of my life... I scoured the country to find the right truck, spent 6 months doing restoration work and getting it just how I wanted it, then stuffed it into the back of a 2008 F-150 King Ranch at 65 MPH. Traffic was bad that day and when 2 cars in from of me made a sudden lane change to avoid stopped traffic I had no escape... had no choice but to lock up the brakes and brace for impact. God I loved that truck.

I know for a fact that Ranger automatic mainshafts are different between 2WD and 4WD, so I can’t imagine the situation for a manual is any different. Unless the tailshaft housing for a manual has a secondary shaft accommodating the slip yoke.

Well my M5R2 is out of a Bronco, but I see your point

Could you? Youre a lifesaver. Jake has been telling me that there are like 5 shafts for that trans depending on year, model and drive type. But the way he’s been describing it makes me not 100% trust him

Just got back to me oddly..

The main shaft is the difference and there are only two for 1988-1995 F Series trucks.

2WD Ford P/N E8TZ-7061C 21.750” long

4WD Ford P/N E8TZ-7061D 20.50" long

but the splines are the same? so maybe I can modify a tailshaft housing to work. 1.7" is not a big difference
